If you are in your twenties it’s about time to start paying a little more attention to your skincare routine. We all know an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. It is much more conducive to our skin’s health to preserve, conserve, and maintain it’s health rather than trying to correct any “wear and tear” that will occur over time. Here are the top 5 skincare tips to live by and why they are to crucial.
1. Avoid bad habits
If you haven’t already been told; smoking, partying all night, and going to bed with a full face of makeup on are bad for your skin. Being in my twenties as well, I understand that this can be common behavior. However, it is important to try to find ways to minimize the damage we cause to our skin and still enjoy our youth. TIPS: I keep makeup remover wipes out on my makeup counter where I can see them. This helps me remember to remove my makeup before I get to bed. Also, I find that once you are removing your makeup you are more inclined to add your moisturizer while you’re at it.
2. Protect your skin from the sun
Being a Miami girl, I absolutely love tanning and enjoying the beach with my friends. Unfortunately, it is a love-hate relationship. Prolonged exposure to the sun’s ultraviolet light damages the fibers in our skin, causes signs of aging, and can even cause cancerous skin lesions. How can you fight back? Easy, don’t leave your house without sunblock of at least SPF 30. Also, don’t over expose yourself to the sun. Come on girls, you know when you’ve had enough. TIP: There are plenty of foundation formulas that already contain SPF 30. I personally love in shade Medium for my skin.
3. Maintain a balanced diet
What we put into our bodies is what shapes our health. Have you ever noticed if you eat a big cheeseburger or a slice of pizza how the area around your mouth reacts? If you are like me, you literally wake up the next day with three new pimples. Maintaining a balanced diet will reflect directly on your face and give you the healthy glowing skin you are looking for. Talk to your doctor or a nutritionist about what the right diet is for your skin type.
4. Topical Skincare
Sometimes your skin needs agents that your body does not produce on its own and that you can’t get from a balanced diet. It is important to have a proper skin evaluation and treat the problem areas of your skin now that you are in your twenties, so that they don’t become worse as you age. I personally found the skin evaluation and consultation at my local Kiehl’s very helpful and informative.
5. Under Eye care
The most overlooked and under cared for part of the face is the under eye area. The skin under your eyes is the thinnest layer of skin on your face, therefore it requires special attention. First, remove all makeup from under your eyes as carefully as possible. When I first started wearing makeup I would scrub my eye makeup off, huge no-no! Next, add an under eye cream to your skincare regimen. There are plenty of different products that can help with all types of under eye issues or concerns. I personally use a moisturizing and firming cream to help prevent wrinkles.
